A morning of golf can mean more scholarships for local students
Kappa Alpha Psi’s annual golf tourney aims to net $10K for college-bound seniors
WINTER PARK – Winter Park Kappa Foundation has provided $4,000 in need-based scholarships for the past three years because of successful fund-raising efforts by the Winter Park Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. For 2016, however, there’s a stretch goal -- $10,000 – which both organizations are determined to meet. Their strategy is to boost sales to the max for the Jack Leflore Memorial Golf Outing, an event Winter Park Alumni has sponsored almost annually since 2006. Its name honors a distinguished member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Jack Leflore, a former vice president of sales for Jostens Inc. whose roles in the fraternity ranged from official jeweler to polemarch (president) of its South Central region. Leflore was an inaugural member of Winter Park Alumni in 1992 and served actively until his death in 2003.
The foundation awards scholarships using academic and extracurricular achievement and financial need as criteria. Last year’s recipients graduated from Orange and Seminole county high schools and are enrolled in colleges including University of Central Florida and University of Virginia. “College costs remain high and unaffordable for many families, and with many of us having been beneficiaries of scholarship support ourselves, we feel it is our obligation to help promising students as much as possible,” said Mark Hillery, who chairs the scholarship program.
That help will occur if golf tournament tickets are sold. So, here are the event details and how tickets can be purchased:
Jack Leflore Memorial Charity Golf Outing

Partial proceeds from ticket sales also will be used for Winter Park Alumni programs that support disadvantaged families and youth mentorship initiatives, said Erick Wicker, the chapter’s president. “Seriously, our goal is to raise at least $10, 000. It may be ambitious, but the needs of children and families in our community demand this effort.”
